Devil Without a Cause is Kid Rock's breakthrough album. It was released in 1998 by Atlantic Records and produced by John Travis. The album was certified 11 times Platinum by the RIAA by April 2003. In 2007, the National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame named Devil Without A Cause the 68th best album of all time. The album sold just 5000 copies in its first week. The first single "Welcome 2 The Party" with its low budget video failed to make a big impression. A chance meeting at a New York night club with Carson Daly, at the time a VJ for MTV and host of Total Request Live (TRL), got Kid Rock a DJ gig on MTV during their summer break special on TRL. He was eventually booked to perform in December of 1998 on MTV Fashionably Loud which got him noticed by the college crowd and MTV released "I Am The Bullgod" video on their programming. The song was originally released on 1994's Fire It Up EP, and it became a moderate hit.
The subsequent single, "Bawitdaba", built off of an old school rap chant and AC/DC style guitars, helped him break into the rock top 10 and ultimately become a household name. He had even greater success with the third single, landing his first pop top 40 hit with "Cowboy", an oddball mix of rap, southern rock, country and folk. Kid Rock released the ballad "Only God Knows Why", which was praised as the 1990s version of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird". The final single was the southern rocker "Wasting Time". The rest of the album saw an eclectic mix of rock, rap and country. The rap metal song "Fuck Off" featured a then-unknown rapper called Eminem.
Devil Without a Cause is currently one of the two records with a parental advisory label to be certified Diamond, the other being Outkast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.

After "Fuck Off" ends, there are a series of messages from Kid Rock's answering machine that introduce the next track.

"Black Chick, White Guy" – 12:01 Notes: There is a clean version of the album, which removes most of the profanity and innuendo, as well as the songs "Fuck Off", and "Black Chick, White Guy". Both versions feature a techno rock remix of "I Am the Bullgod" as a hidden track. However, on the album's explicit version there's still profanity and innuendo censored out on "Cowboy", the first part of "Welcome 2 the Party", and "I Got One For Ya'". There were also two words censored out in "Fuck Off". In the second verse, "Cancer" and "Homo" were censored out.

On the edited copy of the CD, the cover of the CD itself is all black with the name "Kid Rock" at the top. The original, un-edited cover of the CD which is photo of a big middle finger. On the vinyl version there's a small demon performing fellatio.
